One of the oldest prayers to our Blessed Mother is referred to in Latin as Sub Tuum Praesidium (Under Thy Protection). The oldest known version is found on an Egyptian papyrus from the 3rd century. This prayer is used in Litanies to the Blessed Mother and as a concluding prayer to Compline. A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful
who recite it.
SUB tuum praesidium confugimus
Sancta Dei Genetrix
Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus,
sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper
Virgo gloriosa et benedicta
Dómina nostra, Mediátrix nostra
Advocáta nostra
tuo fílio nos reconcília
tuo fílio nos comménd
tuo fílio nos repræsénta
Amen
UNDER thy protection we seek refuge,
Holy Mother of God;
Despise not our petitions
in our needs,
But from all dangers deliver us always,
Virgin Glorious and Blessed
Our Lady, our Advocate,
our Mediator, our Comforter
Reconcile us with your Son
Commend us to your Son
Present us to your Son
Amen
